The island was discovered and named by Christopher Columbus in June 1502. The inhabitants, the Kalinas, originally called their island Madinina “Island of Flowers”. In September 1635, the West India Company took possession of the island in the name of King Luis the XIII of France. Since then, the island has been a fully integrated part of France and therefore also part of the European Union

The island is located in the middle of the French Antilles, between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, 440 km off the coast of Venezuela. The island is only 70 km long and 30 km wide, framed by palm trees and turquoise water.

For a long time, the island served as a favorable place for sugar production in France. Due to the resulting economic development, the slave trade flourished and Martinique became famous for the production of rum
